National Bike Month in May once again saw the weather starting to warm up and lots of people starting to get active! First established in 1956, Bike Month was used as a way of celebrating biking. It touted the health benefits associated with cycling and encouraged people to just give it a try.

To celebrate this May, TransAction Associates hosted a month-long commuter challenge called Bike to Anywhere.”  To participate, bikers could ride to work, to do errands, or even just for fun.

Riders at participating locations logged their bike trips in the Commute Calendar at eCommuter.org. Everyone who entered trips was eligible to enter a prize drawing to win gift cards, bike gear, and more.

A total of 1,102 bike trips were made during the “Bike to Anywhere” challenge. Replacing driving with biking helped:

  • Decrease traffic congestion
  • Reduce carbon footprint
  • Improve health

Bike Month participation also resulted in:

  • 4,486.2 driving miles reduced
  • $2,332.82 saved when switching from driving to pedaling
  •  481.3 pounds of greenhouse gas emissions reduced from the environment

Check out how these bike commuters made a positive impact on the environment, and what the results look like on a larger scale:

Along with the “Bike to Anywhere” commuter challenge, Program Managers helped host various promotions designed to get commuters out of their cars and onto a bike. Events included partnerships with various bike shops to hold Bike Safety Check Events across the Commonwealth. Bike mechanics from Urban Adventours, Landry’s, and Abby Velo were on-site at client locations to tune-up bikes and get them ready to ride!

With cleaner air, warmer weather, and safety-checked bikes -- this summer is shaping up to be ideal for bikers and green commuters alike.
